Whitney: Thursday, September 12.

These posts are getting fewer and further between. I'm sorry Boobsicle. Things have gotten increasingly hectic since I last posted, so I will try to fill you in on the dirty details as well as I can.

Friday, Sept 6: Whitney has epiphany, decides she's finding her way. She's really dipping her toe into the bottomless well of inner-insanity.

Waking the Kraken

Saturday, Sept 7:

"Grandma, why is he facing the window?"
"I reckon he wants to get out."

Whitney shoots photo of the three ladies she's wanted for a while now. Events lead to the discovery of oodles of old photographs hidden in a box in Grandma's closet. Whitney is slightly upset Mosie's been holding out on her. Insane digging/sorting/documenting/stealing begins to happen. Must leave living room a mess to go shoot (with Casey assisting) Peggy's birthday party. Returns to photographic mess, and begins to really nail down ideas for the Mama project. Eventually tells Eva. Eva seems amused. Project idea development at this point: Pick flowers/pieces of botanical life and scan them over top of photos in a "pressed flower" fashion that conveniently covers Eva's face.
Peggy, surprised.

Sunday, Sept 8: Frantically finishes gathering family photos and flowers from around homeland. Works at 12, then comes back to the apartment and starts to arrange flowers and Eva photos.
Decides she likes the way they look ever-so-gracefully placed over the photographs. Shoots them like that. Possible night spent at Justin's (can't remember)?
Project idea development at this point: Shoot photographs laying on a surface with the flowers/leaves laid across Eva's face. Photographs all ended up being from before Whitney's time; them emerges.
Collecting & labeling

Men.
Me, WINNING.

Monday, Sept 9: Whitney watches the Iron Man 3 or whatever. Likes it. Goes to Italian and Concepts, projects are discussed. Pookster's crit goes well, much feedback received for the seventy-four photos shot (she was productive). Frantically prints into the night for remaining two (of three) Van Dykes for Alt Processes. Loses interest. Not a great trio.
Project idea development at this point: Think about shooting photographs in different environments/over different surfaces. It will be a book titled "EVA". My teacher suggests spiral-bound, which is possible, but maybe alternatives are possible with your assistance. It will end up being less than 40 pages (double-sided printing). Chew on that and let me know.
Sample of round 1 images.

Tuesday, Sept. 10: Does a baby crit/review of Van Dykes in Alt. Meh. Italian happens. Possible scanning of family photos happens. Starts feeling a little sick. Shoves food from The Village into face in time to leave for work. Starts feeling worse on the walk to car. Reaches peak crumminess upon arrival to work. Works through it. Gets lonely and dumb at the boy for wanting to use his Living Social deal before it runs out (last option was World War Z which she didn't want to see). Tries to sleep. **Has been waking up around 3am and not getting back to sleep.**

"bathing suit"

Wednesday, Sept. 11: Wakes up, kind of, is still salty/exhausted, starts going into panic mode about assignments. Invites Justin to Shafer and is salty at him. Makes him feel bad, feels bad as result. Gets upset about lunch options. Then just upset. Sobs because the hamburger she doesn't even like falls on the floor. Justin has to drive around the block an extra time as to allow Pooks to will herself out of the car to the apartment. She decides she needs a mental break. Skips Italian and Concepts, a bit reluctantly, but knows she needs to stop and breathe. Wallows a bit, but mainly works on Van Dykes. Buys a Yoohoo. Soul heals a bit. Goes to Printing like a champ and uses that time to print an assignment she doesn't care about. Everyone is jealous that she is done. She tells them not to be because she skipped class. Meets Justin for a much more pleasant stroll/dinner in the Commons. Goes back and watches Friends. Finally sleeps.

Whitney's two-second, lackluster explanation of how to prepare Van Dykes:

In the darkroom, dip the brush into the solution and coat paper by making even strokes across the paper, then repeating in different directions. Let dry.

In the case of making negatives, take an image and up the contrast, flip it, make it black and white, invert it. Print it out on transparency paper.

(that just took me like, ten minutes total to arrange. Blogger you suck.)

 After that, you just take you new negative into the darkroom, secure it on top of the paper (best way is to use a piece of glass clipped to a firm surface to sandwich), and expose it to sunlight. Bring it in, fix and wash it, let it dry.

Before fixing
After fixing, mostly dry.

Thursday, Sept. 12 (today): Justin and I had an episode of howling super weird noises at each other this morning, which you would have both been concerned about and appreciated. Made it to class on time with five Van Dykes just to show progress, was pretty happy with them. I still have lots to do, and an actual project to start printing for for Alt. 3 Van Dykes: Animal, Vegetable, Mineral. Basically what it says: one van dyke each representing something animal, botanical, and mineral. Kind of excited. This seems more up my alley than previous things.
~~~I am now running on reserve battery power. OH NOOOOO~~~
All fixed.
So I've been doings lots of the things recently, and it's all been stacking up. Stress stress stress. I might consider re-submitting my work availability to knock Tuesdays out, but I've really been relying on the measly amount of money I get from work to survive. Struggles. I need to photograph my little bike guy more. Will put that on my list of things to accomplish. I want to finish this post before I have to go to Italian, but I'm fearing I won't. I'll try to sneak some more lessons into my next post for you.
A parting photo for you. I'm assuming this was some little convict escape artist baby cow that they had to cuff and bring back to the farm. Casey took this. Completely unedited. I'm so excited for her to have D90.
